I find myself in what I know is an enviable and lucky position, in that I’ve been on the list for a Taycan since near the beginning. And now that it’s been revealed I’m not so sure. (Other friends feel the same way.)
Specced out how I would want it, it’s a hair shy of $200k. That’s almost 2x as expensive as the best Tesla the way I would spec it out. And the Porsche probably is a better car, but 2x as good? For the same money I could replace my 10-year-old G550 with a well-specced new G550, and but a very well equipped Model3 with the difference. Or replace the G550 with an eTron - which would do the same job as the G - and just keep enjoying the Alfa. Or do nothing.
It just doesn’t seem like the kind of crazy car you should pay $200k for. Even if the performance is amazing, at the end of the day it’s a sedan. Sure, an electric one, but that’s no longer ground-breaking.
What would you do Oppo?

I’d buy it. But it costs more than my house, so It’ll be a while before I can! And I’m not even a Porsche fan, it’s just the first high end electric car that’s excited me at all. Can you wait for the non “turbo” versions to be released or do you lose your spot?

Buy the best Tesla Model S with the normal gauges you can find and put the one hundred thousand dollars you save into VAG stock.

I wouldn’t, but I’m also a bit of a luddite when it comes to engine tech ( NA> Turbo> electric), so the Taycan doesn’t do much for me.
I’ve driven the Model S and it’s nice, but left me cold.

I don’t like the size of the Model S (too big), but t he absolute best Model3 is only just over $60k.

$60k for the Model 3 and $40k to put the Model S gauges in it.

I like this. How about $60k for the Model3 and $1ok for a VR headset to make it look like it has real gauges?

I haven’t paid attention to any of the price annoucements. i thought it was going to be around 125.
Its all relative. I lust after a new 911, but 100k is una t tainible and ust makes me depressed.

I have 2 other friends with reservations, we all figured the best possible one was going to be around $150 decently optioned. Turns out nope.

tough sell - would I spend that kind of money on a 4dr 911 turbo S that is a technical tour de force but not something I’d be comfortable routinely driving? Even money no object it’s a tough sell over many other options. How about a nice hybrid Lexus and something else more funsies.

Electric cars are neat to drive, but the lack of sound to go along with the performance leave the experience a bit cold. To spend $200k on one? It’d have to be pretty compelling, and the Taycan doesn’t seem to be. The model 3 dual motor seems to give you a pile of performance without the enormous price tag. If I were spending $200k and wanted at least one EV , I’d buy a Model 3 dual motor and then a Viper. Then a Caterham or Lotus something.

I think the Taycan looks amazing, and I’m sure the interior and feel are far ahead of what’s now a nearly 10 year old Tesla platform, but it’s a tough call. As much as I love Porsche, the price premium is hard to take. We all know they charge more because they can, but with a fresh and unproven platform it’s awfully hard to justify to anyone not in it simply for the badge image. I ’m really curious to see the inevitable comparison tests. What do they require to stay on the list? In your position, I’d probably wait, because i agree that near $200k for an unknown quantity is hard to swallow.
If I had to have a hot rod Porsche 4-door and didn’t necessarily care about it being electric or having the newest freshboi I’d spec a Panamera Sport Turismo.

The only people for whom the Taycan “ makes sense” are people who were already in the market for a Panamera turbo hybrid. Since you weren’t, and it doesn’t even sound like you want one, I’d pass.

I still think the current electric cars are too heavy no matter how pancaked the weight is. One more generation should change that, tho

No electric for me any time soon. My sights are squarely set on the RS6.
Having said that...I do not trust Tesla’s quality control at all. So I would just wait for a lower tier Taycan. Tesla cannot match Porsche build quality in a million years.

I’m not a fan of early adopting new tech. So do you want/need a new toy? I feel like if you haven’t sprung for a Tesla already, I’m n ot sure what the Taycan will provide you if that makes any sense.

I think Porsche missed the pricing mark they needed to hit with the Taycan. I’m with you that it needs to be about $50k cheaper to be competitive.

If a hard loaded Taycan was around Panamera Turbo S prices, I’d consider...but for basically $200,000 I’d tell Porsche to shove it.
I can buy a LOT of car for $200,000 and a first gen all electric sedan is not what I would buy first

What about waiting for the lower models (the alleged base Taycan and Taycan S that will be released later this year)? If you’ve waited this long another few months shouldn’t hurt.

Personally I would not be cross shopping the Taycan with a Tesla, but there are so few luxury electric options (jaguar?). I wonder if the Porsche leasing options will be enticing?
I’d rather have a cheap electric for scooting around / commute and a Panamera Turismo for the longer hauls.

I think your last sentence is the best point. I was hoping Porsche would hit a home run on the electric car with a price tag of right about $150k with a really cool design. Instead it’s $50k more and for the most part a 3/4-scale Panamera - which isn’t a bad looking car but it’s not revolutionary.

Think of the Taycan Turbo as the 911R for Porsche’s electric line. They’ll make a ton of profit off of them from early adopters, which will help cover the massive costs of development, it will be universally loved by reviewers,
and then they’ll release lesser models with much of the same tech for much less.
Unless you have to be the first one on the block with one, pass.
